7 Design and Décor Trends for 2017

We’ve rounded up the top trends that forecasters and designers are talking about in 2017. So, if you’re renovating, building or just have a love to update your home’s décor or design, take note now:

1. Green, green, green

Pantone – the authority on all things colour related in the world – announced that ‘Greenery’ is their colour of the year. Meaning that this lush hue will undoubtedly influence just about anything design, décor and fashion related. Bringing the trend into your home is easy: add green scatter cushions to your lounge; cover a central wall with wallpaper in shades of green (wallpaper is also trending); or place a gorgeous pot plants in your lounge.

2. Cork Walls

No, this is not 1973!  The sustainable and practical elements of cork walls are bringing it right into 2017 – great for absorbing/blocking out sound, pinning inspiration to and bringing earthy warmth to your home.

3. Marble

Speaking of a vintage trend making a comeback, say hello to marble. This luxe material will be big in many ways this year: from large statement pieces (think marble table) to countertops and flooring, and event accessories like serving platters and vases.  

4. Terracotta tiles

No need to go to the Mediterranean or Tuscany in 2017; this is the year to bring it to you as the classic terracotta tile makes an expected return to the world of décor. So, if you’re kitchen, lounge or braai area is in need of a tile update, think terracotta!

5. Texture

This year, there’s also focus strongly on materials that adds sense of touch element to décor. Think: velvets, faux fur, chucky knits, rattan, bamboo, jute and wood. Headboards, chairs, pillows, throws and baskets are just some of the ways you can bring texture into your home.

6. Retro lighting

Thinking about upgrading light fixtures or lamps in your home? Well, then 2017 is the year to do it! But not before taking inspiration from the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s – quirky lights from yesteryear have made a serious comeback and will be trending for the next couple of years.

7. Terrariums

While big pot plants (uhm, delicious monsters!) have been dominating interior décor trends for a number of years now, 2017 will see smaller glass planters – a la terrariums – trend. They are easy to care for and come in various unique shapes; we can totally see why terrariums will be a hit.
