In today’s fast-paced world, everyone could use a little bit of time out in nature, which is why a beautiful outdoor area can make a big difference to your property — and your lifestyle. Here are some tips to take your garden to the next level.

1. Add some instant colour with indigenous plants

There’s nothing more depressing than watching the beautiful flowerbeds you’ve just planted wilt and die before your eyes. Most of us have tried our hand at gardening at some point in our lives and most of us have failed because we didn’t pay attention to what plants thrive in our area.

Do your homework before planting anything. Your local nursery will likely have a consultant happy to help you pick plants that will do well in your climate. If you live in a water-scarce area, like the Western Cape, plant colourful fynbos or aloes that can withstand the dry conditions.

2. Create an entertainment area

Your garden can be so much more than just a place for your kids to run wild. Think braais in the summer with friends, relaxing drinks on the patio after work, and a quiet spot for you to enjoy your morning coffee. And it doesn’t have to cost a fortune to create.Garden-bench-hanging-swing

You could consider paving a small section to make a seating area, using pot plants to screen from the wind or neighbours, and possibly erecting an awning to provide extra shade and shelter.

Adding a few well-placed garden lights can also turn your outdoor space into a nighttime wonderland, while investing in some good-quality garden furniture can show off the lifestyle value your home offers.

3. Keep it low maintenance

Everyone may love a scenic garden but not everyone will love the upkeep that comes with it! Unless you’re willing to spend hours tending your flowerbeds, it’s worth trying to create a low maintenance garden that looks good all year round.

Try to include as many plants that are native to your area as possible. Avoid plants that require frequent pruning and which could interfere with your security system.

If you live in an area that gets little rainfall, you may want to consider investing in a well point and irrigation system. This could add significant value to your home when it comes time to sell.

4. Plant fragrant herbs and flowers

Don’t underestimate the importance that scent can play in making your garden and your home a sanctuary. A pot of lavender at your front door can help your guests (or potential buyers) feel relaxed and welcome, while the scent of jasmine climbing a trellis near your patio can instantly take your mind off the stress of the day.

Flowers and herbs picked from your garden can also be used to naturally scent your home, without the need for harmful store-bought aerosols.

5. Create an eye-catching focal area

If your garden is looking less than attractive, instead of despairing and throwing in the trowel, choose one area to focus on improving.

For those of us living in the Western Cape, the drought has likely wrecked havoc with your garden but that doesnt mean it cant be redeemed. Consider replacing your lawn with an artificial grass, and plant hardy natural grasses and aloes where flowers have died in your beds to bring in some texture and colour.

You can also divert peoples attention away from less attractive spots in your garden by drawing their eyes to a cluster of striking aloes, or a bench surrounded by pots filled with water-wise plants.

If water isnt a concern in your area, then a water feature is also a great way to add some interest to your outdoor living space and draw eyes away from any unsightly spots.

What improvements do you dream of doing to your garden this year? We’d love to hear your ideas!
