Neighbourhoods fit for food lovers

Who doesn’t dream about rolling straight out of bed on a Saturday morning and right into your neighbouring coffee shop for a delightful brekkie? Or wish that they could “just pop around the corner” to the local diner for a beer and burger after a long day at the office?

Luckily in South Africa – where a love for good food and drink is deliciously strong – there are a number of neighbourhoods where foodies can have their cake (well, French toast, waffles, burgers, tacos, pizzas, tapas… you get the idea?) and eat it without having to travel too far from home. So, whether you’re in the market for property or not, we can’t be blamed if our round of the top foodie neighbourhoods wet your appetite to relocate.

JOBURG

4TH AVENUE, PARKHURST

While it’s mostly the arty, creative types who frequent the sea of sidewalk cafes, suits and yummy mummies are often seen here too.

Best brekkie: 4th Avenue Coffee Roasters (Cnr of 4th Avenue and 11th Avenue)

What better way to start your day than with a decent flat white and Nutella and toasted almonds smother crumpets?

Lazy lunch: Bottega (22D 4th Avenue)

At this 4th Avenue gem you can go straight from breakfast to lunch to dinner. Their stuffed artichokes and pork ribs come highly recommended.

Delicious dinner: The Wolfpack (21 4th Avenue)

Three words: Teriyaki Pork Burger. In fact, any burger. Throw in a side order of sweet potato fries (oh yes!) and craft beer, and you may never want to eat at any other burger joint.

Fine dining must: Cube (17 4th Avenue)

If there is one treat to try in 4th Avenue, then this is it. Cube’s 10 course tasting meal has literally trended on social media... Plus you can BYOB! #Winning.

MABONENG

It may be situated in the old central Joburg, but Maboneng has in recent years – after a good clean up – become the new kid on the foodie block. And this precinct is cooler than cool with something for everyone…

Best brekkie: Eat Your Heart Out (Fox Street Studios, 290 Fox Street)

This deli-come-quirky-diner serves all-day breakfast that is mostly inspired by Israeli food (read: healthy but still delicious!).

Lazy lunch: Mama Mexicana (Arts on Main, Fox Street)

You can’t be blamed if this becomes your favourite new local hangout – their authentic tacos are really that good!

Delicious dinner: Little Addis (Fox Street Studios, 290 Fox Street)

If the idea of eating with your hands and enjoying the most incredible food appeals to you, then you simply must sample their meat and veggie injera platter!

Weekend special: Sha’p (Curiocity Backpackers, Auret Street)

What is a weekend in South Africa without a braai? At this pop-up shisanyama stand you can find a real taste for local braai flavours with chicken, boerie, steak and pap!

 CAPE TOWN

BREE STREET, CAPE TOWN CBD

Home of the hipsters, Bree Street is lined with the trendiest set of restaurants. Fortunately, you don’t need to wear skinnies, have a beard or don a fedora to fit in!

Best brekkie: Jason Bakery (185 Bree Street)

Look if the doughssant (think of America’s cronuts) doesn’t win you over, then their famous croissant and scrambled eggs with a flat white certainly will!

Lazy lunch: Bacon on Bree (217 Bree Street)

That’s right! An entire restaurant dedicated to the goodness of bacon! The Harvey Spector (a bacon, brie and pesto ciabatta) is as yummy as Harvey from the TV series Suits is, well, yummy.

Delicious dinner: Bocca (217 Bree Street)

You don’t need to travel to Italy to sample authentic Neapolitan pizza – Bocca’s fluffy, doughy pizzas will make you feel like you are in the heart of Naples.

Fine dining must: Charango (114 Bree Street)

Tapas is a big deal with this Peruvian restaurant – order a few and share with your friends. It also features a mind-blowing murial designed by street artist Faith47!

SECOND AVENUE, HARFIELD VILLAGE

Those who live in the suburbs don’t need to travel far to sample some of Cape Town’s gastronomic delights.

Best brekkie: Twigs with Beans (Shop 5, Second Avenue)

You know a place has good coffee and breakfast when the hipsters travel in troupes to get their flat white and bacon and egg croissant fix…

Lazy lunch: Graze (166 Second Avenue)

Here you can really eat to your heart’s content because the menu features South African favourites but with a healthy twist (think: low carb burgers). Yes!

Delicious dinner: Morituri  (214 Main Road, Claremont)

Morituri serves the kind of pizza that Dean Martin sang about in his hit Amore – authentic, awesome and so amore!

DURBAN

MORNINGSIDE

This little tree lined road near Durban central is where locals, tourists and anyone in between flock to on any given day.

Best brekkie: Spiga D’ora (200 Florida Road)

While any time of the day is a good time to stop by Spiga, their Italian-inspired breakfasts (think Italian toast and pancetta) are a particular highlight.

Lazy lunch: Mark Gold (469 Innes Road)

A contemporary jewellery store fronted by a coffee shop, Mark Gold’s light meals (scrumptious salads and sandwiches) will tantalize your tastebuds.

Delicious dinner: Butcher Boys (170 Florida Road)

Calling all carnivores! The Butcher Boys is where you’ll find lip-smacking steaks cooked to perfection – even Gordon Ramsey will approve.

Fine dining must: Quarters Brasserie (101 Florida Road)

If you’re looking for all the frills of fine dining without the fuss, then this find in the Quarters Hotel Complex won’t disappoint. And neither will their duck breast in sticky Cointreau and star anise sauce…
