It’s a sad yet true fact that we live in a world nowadays were many of us don’t even know what our neighbours look like – let alone what their names are! But it doesn’t have to be that way... Why not make an effort to show your neighbours some love and, by this, turn your community into a place where everyone wants to live?
Here are four easy ways you can start the neighbourhood revolution:
1. Start a community chat group
Create a neighbourhood Whatsapp group where your neighbours can share valuable information such as municipal issues, crime updates and awareness, as well as key public events. It’s one of the easiest ways to build camaraderie!
2. Perform random acts of kindness
Who doesn’t appreciate a little spoil every now and then? So, share the loot from the fruit tree in your backyard with a neighbour down the road, mow your elderly neighbour’s lawn, bring your next door neighbour’s garbage bins in after the removal services have collected the rubbish or help your neighbour hang those frames that have been sitting on the floor for weeks.
3. Turn your front yard into your backyard
How often do you hangout in your neighbour’s backyard? Probably seldom to never. Why not move those typical backyard activities (such as a game of touch rugby or soccer and, even, those braais) to the front of your property? The more time you spend time in an open, accessible area, the better the chance of your neighbours approaching you when passing by. A new friendship is just waiting to start!
4. Organise a get-together
There’s really no better way to get to know your neighbour than over food and drinks, right? So, start a party! Think: a street braai, a travelling dinner through the neighbourhood or a pool party where young and old can have the best fun under the sun.
