Cape Agulhas Reserve's most opulent home comes onto the market - at a price of R10,750,000

The small Overberg town of Cape Agulhas which has just 4,000 inhabitants and is situated about 35 km from Bredasdorp, has a little known development which, says Marthie Jones, the Rawson Property Group’s franchisee for the area, has “everything going for it”. It is, she says, unashamedly upmarket and designed to appeal to a nature and outdoor lover, as well as those who enjoy the sea.

This development, known as the Cape Agulhas Nature Reserve, offers 400 ha of unspoilt fynbos, which is home to six or seven species of small buck. The plan for the reserve includes 80, all fully serviced, erven allocated for residential buildings and these erven are generally some 300 m2 in size and vary in price from R215,000 to R700,000. To date, a few houses have been built, all with views of the sea and the mountains. One of the homes that the Rawson Property Group is marketing here at the moment is a smaller house with 191 m2 floor area and two bedrooms. The price is R1,290,000.

Located on the border of this nature reserve, is the largest and most opulent home in the area - which has just come onto the market. This home, says Jones, is double storey and situated on a 10,000 m2 stand with 916 m2 of floor space. It has no less than nine bedrooms and eight bathrooms, three spacious reception and entertainment areas, an indoor braai facility, a bar and a conference room. Externally there is a pool and two garages.

The home is thatched and the walls are built of stone. The doors and windows are wood, the floors are covered by both tiles and carpets and the kitchen is equipped with a built-in five plate gas stove with an electric oven, extractor fan, built-in microwave and lots of built-in cupboards with granite tops. The home is fully walled and has an electronically operated gate.

The list price of the home is R10,750,000.

Since adopting the Rawson Property Group brand and becoming a franchisee in March this year, her agency, says Jones, has been attracting three or four times as many enquiries as previously. Enquiries have, in fact, come from as far afield as Johannnesburg, Tshwane, Durban, the whole of the rural Cape as well as from Cape Town itself. The call, says Jones, is usually for homes that are relatively inexpensive, in the R800,000 to R1,5 million price range.

“We have recently sold two houses at prices of R750,000 and R1,200,000,” says Jones, “and it looks as if we will be selling at the rate of almost one per month before the end of this year. People are attracted to the area because of its safety (we have almost no crime here), the superb fishing and the good coastal harbours, the 14 km beach (the longest on this section of the Western Cape coastline) and by the peace and quiet that Cape Agulhas, Struisbaai and other villages in the area can offer.”
