The holiday season is just around the corner, which means it’s time to start thinking about transforming your home into a festive wonderland. One of the top trends this year is sustainability, so we’ve put together a list of eco-conscious DIY home décor ideas to get you started.

Environmentally friendly interior decoration does not mean you have to skip out on colour, texture or opulence! We have some super simple swaps for those who love dopamine décor or are still loving the neutrals.

Branching out

Celebrating Christmas but not too sure what to do about a tree? No matter the size of yourcamylla-battani-l8Y9fVgxrEE-unsplash space, there’s an option for you. Many people are buying or dressing up an existing indoor potted plant with handmade decorations. We are also seeing trees made from foraged driftwood and wire, A-frames made from wood off-cuts that are decked with ornaments, as well as wall trees. Wall trees are simple and so eco-friendly. They are constructed on a wall or a flat surface using whatever you have lying around – craft paper, fairy lights, photographs, sequins, handmade pom poms and tinsel. You really can get as creative as you want!

Spruce things up a bit
A big influence this year has been Bridgerton-inspired decadence. Think elegance and ornate detailing. The best way to achieve this is to haul out your vintage decorations, use the cutlery or crockery that is usually packed away or visit some of your local antique or charity shops. Secondhand stores are an excellent place to find brass candlesticks, decanters and cut glass tumblers for serving drinks. You might even find a platter or dish to add to your tablescape. By choosing pre-owned items or reusing family heirlooms, you are keeping costs to a minimum and embracing sustainability.

For those who like to keep it natural, you’ll be happy to know that rustic festive decor is also trending. Dramatic blooms, ferns, sprigs of eucalyptus and deep forest greens will turn your home into a festive oasis. Pair this with neutral tones or pastel shades, like blush pink and soft peach, to bring some understated elegance and calm to your space. Floral patterns or animal baubles and tablescapes using found foliage can also take your decorating to the next level. Add natural textures, such as wood, wool, linen and hessian, along with handmade festive-themed items to create a wonderful ambience. We recommend keeping it carbon-friendly by choosing local and handcrafted items.

Paper decorations using leftover fabric swatches, sparkly ribbons, fancy wallpaper or craft supplies are in style right now  – so why not take advantage of this fun DIY home project? Paper-cutting machines make it a lot easier to turn your imagination into reality, but an old-school pair of scissors will also do the trick. Other handmade crafts, like crochet, cross-stitch, lino cutting and macrame, are also popular and make for fabulously festive decorations. Not only are these great group activities, but making something by hand can be quite rewarding. If you’re not feeling particularly crafty, now’s the best time to invest in some artisanal, handcrafted, wooden or recycled decorations. Reusable crackers are also making a comeback and are an excellent eco-friendly answer to table decorations.

Wreath for the stars
Embrace your eco-friendly side with a DIY wreath for your home using natural elements that can be composted or upcycled. Use contrasting textures, like leftover ribbons from presents, greenery collected from weekend walks, dried flowers or fruit, twine and wire. Wreaths are a fantastic way to decorate, as they can be customised depending on the season. Use them to dress up tables or as a festive front door feature to welcome guests to your home.
